BrasilFest – Aug. 18

Watch a demonstration of the elegant and powerful capoeira martial arts, see glittering costumes and eat authentic food while learning about a remarkable and varied culture at Seattle Center Festál:  BrasilFest, 12 p.m. – 8 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18, in Seattle Center Armory, Mural Amphitheatre and Fisher Pavilion rooftop.

BrasilFest celebrates the unique diversity of this South American cultural melting pot, exploring its African, Portuguese and indigenous roots through  classical guitar, Brazilian dances, samba rhythms and the percussive beats of traditional folk music. This year, it recognizes its 15th annual festival with a visual art display, “History of 15 Years of BrasilFest,” representing the Brazilian culture, arts, and entertainment in Seattle.

Featured artists in 2013 include:  Onda Verde, Seattle Brazilian Jazz Ensemble, Fofinho, Samia and Friends, Eduardo Mendonça & Show Brazil!, Batucada Yemanjá, Dora Oliveira, SWOJO – Seattle Women’s Jazz Orchestra, ChoroLoco, Grupo Amoroso, Capoeira FICA, and VamoLá.

Seattle Center Festál, a series of 22 celebrations presented by community organizations in partnership with Seattle Center, considers themes of importance to ethnic cultures in our region, revealing their common forms of tradition and expression, while highlighting their unique contributions to the Pacific Northwest and the world.
