Did you know? Gabriel García Márquez, who won the 1982 Nobel Prize for Literature, was born in 1928 and grew up with his maternal grandparents in northern Colombia between the mountains and the Caribbean Sea. He went to a Jesuit college and considered law, but his studies were soon suspended because of his work as a journalist. In 1954 he was sent to Rome on assignment for his newspaper and since then he has lived mostly abroad – in Paris, Barcelona, Mexico and New York. Márquez is well known for his best seller novel “One Hundred Years of Solitude.” Besides his large output of fiction, he has written screenplays and continues to work as a journalist.
