Latino cultures will come together to celebrate the living and the dead at Seattle Center Festál: Dia de Muertos – A Mexican Celebration to Remember Our Departed, 11am – 7pm, Saturday, Nov. 1 and 11am – 6pm, Sunday, Nov. 2, in Seattle Center Armory. This colorful “Day of the Dead” festival showcases the art, spirituality and roots of Latino culture through live performances, foods, face painting, special hands-on activities, and exquisite displays.
Deeply meaningful and creative community altars, centerpieces of the two-day event, will honor the lives and contributions of the departed. A mock cemetery, constructed by Groupo Michoacano Colibri of Puyallup, will offer festival-goers a glimpse into the intricate and realistic details of such cemeteries in Mexico; and a colorful and transcendent Tapete, or sand sculpture, will be created on the Armory main floor.
Continuous live music and dance will serve to highlight the cultural wealth of local Mexican and Latino cultures. A dance party Saturday night, featuring Comparza de Queretaro, a traditional dance group from Morelos, Mexico, follows a spectacular procession around Seattle Center. This customary parade serves to mimic those that take place in smaller Mexican towns that celebrate Dia de Muertos.
Mexicans residing all over the world celebrate Día de Muertos. The tradition is based on an ancient indigenous ritual. In Seattle, festival organizers hope that their event will help attendees to evaluate and reflect on friends and relatives who have passed as well as the importance of their current relationships.
