Modernizing a Historic Landmark to Improve Accessibility, Safety, and Passenger Experience
Seattle Center and Seattle Monorail Services are gearing up for a significant renovation of the historic Seattle Center Monorail Station—an upgrade designed to enhance accessibility, improve safety, and create a smoother experience for the millions of visitors who rely on the Monorail each year.
Construction begins in September 2026 and will continue through late 2027, with Monorail service operating throughout the project.
As one of Seattle’s most iconic pieces of transportation history, the Monorail has connected downtown and Seattle Center since the 1962 World’s Fair. With ridership continuing to grow and major events driving heavy crowds, the station’s modernization will ensure it meets the needs of both daily riders and event‑goers for decades to come.
What’s Coming to the Station
- A fully ADA‑accessible layout, including a new entry ramp, tactile wayfinding, modern sliding doors, and a resurfaced platform designed to reduce the gap between train and platform.
- Reconfigured ticketing, queuing, and boarding areas to help move people through the station more efficiently during busy event times.
- New automatic passenger gates to streamline boarding and improve crowd safety.
- Structural rehabilitation: restoring steel and concrete elements, replacing aging guardrails, and addressing historic materials like lead paint.
- Extended roof coverage and updated skylights to better protect passengers and preserve the station’s landmarked trains.
